Evolution of Innovative Concepts in Engineering Sciences and Technologies
In recent years, there has been a number of new ideas appearing in the literature concerned with the future of education, research and professional horizons in engineering sciences and technologies. Some of these notions are novel while others are a re-imagination of existing ideas but in a new context. In most countries, especially developing ones, the most important driver of technological innovation as well as the sustainable development is related to the quality of human capital; turning education of human resources, especially in engineering disciplines, to the foundation of innovation and development. Digitalization of the higher education systems, on the other hand, has contributed to build momentum in this direction. This paper was intended to review the horizons and challenges regarding the opportunities and obstacles of approaching new methods of education and research in engineering sciences to improve the professional capabilities of next generation of engineers. This review was conducted through the analysis of the existing challenges posed by sustainability as well as digitalization in academic and professional contexts involved in engineering.
